Building on the success of its inaugural year, the partnership has continued to offer students from the University of Nottingham (UoN) and Nottingham Trent University (NTU) unique access to a world-class orchestra.
From side-by-side performances to collaborative film composition projects, students have gained hands-on experience in music-making, production, and performance. The partnership has enriched student academic journeys and helped them develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in creative industries.
“The collaboration between the BBC Concert Orchestra and Universities for Nottingham is transforming Nottingham’s cultural landscape. It provides students with unprecedented access to a world-class orchestra, offering hands-on experience that opens doors to careers in the arts.”
Professor Jeremy Gregory, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Arts, UoN
Highlights of the year included the BBC Proms arriving in Nottingham for the first time and a performance of Carmina Burana.
The collaborative film composition project, which pairs NTU filmmakers with UoN composers, grew significantly in its second year. It involved around 120 students and culminated in a live performance and recording at the Royal Concert Hall.
This initiative has become a cornerstone of the partnership, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and embedding creative practice into university curricula.
“This pioneering partnership continues to highlight the transformative power of creativity and collaboration. The ongoing presence of the BBC Concert Orchestra in the city has not only enriched the cultural landscape for local audiences but also created meaningful opportunities for community engagement, and hands-on learning experiences for young people.”
Amy Bere, Director of Culture, NTU
Beyond performance, the partnership has delivered a rich programme of guest talks, masterclasses, and mentoring sessions led by BBC Concert Orchestra professionals. These opportunities have helped students develop technical skills, build confidence, and gain insight into the professional music industry.
As the partnership enters its third year, plans are underway to expand side-by-side performance opportunities, launch a larger film music festival and continue to investigate ways to develop collaborative research and funding bids.
With a strong foundation and shared commitment to creativity, education, and public engagement, the Universities for Nottingham and BBC Concert Orchestra are poised to continue inspiring the next generation and enriching the cultural life of the region.
